European Gold

I think I need to correct my accusation of Nazi looting of European gold. Much of the gold of western Europe actually wound up at Fort Knox. Moreover, the Allied powers stand accused of looting Nazi gold at the end of WWII.

I stand corrected. This may weaken my argument that loss of gold reserves prevented the return to a gold standard. Given how often countries fail to play by the rules of a gold standard, it's functionality was limited. We'll learn how these fixed exchange regimes are generally favored for their stability but often fail because of their rigidity.

Connecting to the I-drive from off campus

If you need help connecting to the I-drive, my expertise is limited.

A few tips:

All computer labs on campus ought to be mapped to the network drives. Go to My Computer and the network drives should be listed. Click on the I drive and look for my folder (jjulian). Then look for the Econ 121 folder for stuff relevant for this class.

If you have a computer and you live on campus, you will need to "map" it yourself. You can find instructions at http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/map/

Welcome to Jack Julian's weblog for Econ 346: International Finance, at IUP.

Suggested time waster: Bureau of Economic Analysis

The website has an abundance of data. Hopefully we'll learn to interpret much of it, in particular the section on Balance of Payments (International Transactions).

You're going to need to have some curiosity to really enjoy the course. Admittedly, it's a pretty nerdy course. But again, it is stuff about which most people in the world have little clue. Take a little satisfaction in knowing you'll know about stuff most people don't know about. But be careful, you might start boring people if you talk about it too much. ;-)
